What Are You Missing

The other day I was walking behind a mother and her young daughter, who I overheard saying, "Mommy, I miss being four." The mother then asked her what she most missed about that age, and I did not hear the rest.
But I was so struck by that charming statement: "I miss being four." Said, presumably, from the vast vantage point of being five, and filled with nostalgia for bygone times. I was impressed by the child's acute awareness: of what that last year had that this new one did not; of things longed for; of the differences between now and then.
When Jesus urges us to "become like little children" to enter the kingdom of God, he can mean many things, and I do think that a type of awareness, focus and gratitude is part of what he hints at. This little girl was very present to her current day and age--to the point where she could feel and articulate distinctions.
How about us? Do you "miss" being 37? Do I "miss" being 50, now that 51 is rolling by? More to the point, do I even remember what I did, say, in March 2007? Or have I succumbed to the accumulated blur of time, haste, and little attention to the details that make up a month, a year?
Yes, the little girl has few years to contemplate, so each looms more memorably, but I don't think the call is any different for us:
To take the time to be still, to be aware, to marvel at the different seasons not just of the year, but of our lives. To be aware, with a child's intensity and focus, of what we love, what we miss, what we care about, what we are up to--and why.
And do an inventory... if you "miss" being, say, 20... why? It's not just nostalgia or narcissism to think about retrieval--to pick up qualities you may have lost along the way.
This coming week, how are you called to "become like a child?" |
