Staged reading of WITNESS, a play by Mary Miller: Arts Ministry
The Arts Ministry, through our theatre component, The Theatre Upstairs – downstairs @marble, will be presenting a staged reading in the Sanctuary of the play WITNESS by award-winning playwright and former Marble member Mary Miller. The play was originally written as I Witness in the aftermath of the Rodney King beating at the hands of Los Angeles policemen in March of 1991. Today, WITNESS explores the divisions within both a small white American urban family living in Detroit, MI, and an African American family living in Harlem, NY, during the summer of 1991 when they are suddenly jolted from their numbing existence by a brutal murder. In taking one tragic event, examining it on the same stage, at the same time, through two different families, one black and one white; WITNESS cuts to the core of the humanity of both and tells a story that is more alike than it is different.
*This performance made possible by a City Artists Grant of the New York Foundation of the Arts.*
